Founded in the sixth century by St. David Gareji monasteries. Lavra, Udabno, Dodo and Bertubani are famous for his original architecture and frescoes in the caves of the 8 — 13th century.
In the 8th century in the Lavra of David wsa arranged in a terraced yard, built new cells, a refectory and a church. Soon afterwards built the pool, canals and reservoirs. The greatest prosperity David Gareja reaches in 9-13 centuries.
Walk to monastery Udabno allows you to enjoy spacious views of Azerbaijan from the Georgian side. In Udabno there are magnificent frescoes, reflecting the religious scenes, performed in a special technique and colour scheme. Some of the frescoes represent portraits of historical figures — David the Builder (in Natlis-Mttsemeli), Queen Tamara (in Bertubani), as well as biblical events (The Last Supper, The Raising of the Cross).
